In 2022, the financial industry suffered an average of 1,131 cyberattacks per week. This represents a 52% increase since 2021. More than two-thirds of the major institutions were affected by at least one cyberattack, not counting successfully prevented attacks and unreported cases. Although the increased ICT risks are known and measures have been taken to counter most of them, there were no uniform regulations at a European level for both financial firms and ICT third-party service providers to stabilize digital operational resilience.
