Some might be tempted to think that the EU General Data Protec-tion Regulation(1), which was adopted in 2016 and will apply from 25 May 2018, added only a few new features to the existing data protection framework under Directive 95/46/EC on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data. It is true that the level of data protection within the EU was, compared to other jurisdictions, already robust and high. However, since 1995 rapid technological developments and globalisation, in particular by and via the internet, have brought new challenges for the protection of personal data.
