In June 2021, the European Commission proposed a revised version of the eIDAS Regulation, the Regulation that introduced, in 2014, digital trusted services like digital signature and digital identity. After extensive discussions and negotiations, the European Parliament and Council reached a provisional agreement in November 2023 and the new eIDAS Regulation was published this April, entering into force May the 20th. Member States have until 2026 to implement the new rules. On-line identification and a broader acceptance by telco, banks, the health industry, will be mandatory by May 2027.
