It is a gloomy time of the year, particularly in northern Europe, and markets seem to offer little to lift the spirits. The SP 500 is close to a record high – if you are of a pessimistic disposition then you will be saying there is little upside left and point to the volatile and disappointing start to the year. You could fret about inflation and Covid too.
However, it is worth remembering that pessimism can be costly for investors. Had you taken your money out of the markets in January 2020 you would have avoided the crash that followed in March when Covid hit the markets and stock markets around the world tumbled, but could you have bought back at the right moment...
