The world’s largest pension fund versus its Luxembourg competitor: who won in 2023

By Ivaylo MARKOV, Managing Partner of Thales Capital   The Norwegian State Pension Fund (also known as the Petrol Fund), which is the largest such fund in the world, makes a profit of NOK 2.222 billion (USD 213 billion) in 2023. In other words, the fund earned a return of 21.3% on its investments in equities, a return of 6.1% on its investments in fixed income instruments, and a return of 3.7% on its investments in renewable energy. At the same time, the fund lost 12.4% on its investments in real estate.   “Despite high inflation and geopolitical turmoil, the stock market was very strong in 2023 compared to a weak 2022.
