If there has been one thing more remarkable than Donald Trump’s victory it has been the enthusiasm with which it was greeted by the equity market. For all the controversy, the stockmarket still views America’s 45th president as a blessing. That the Dow Jones Industrial Average passed the 20,000 mark for the first time in its history owes something to the quirks of its calculation. But with less idiosyncratic benchmarks, such as the SP 500, also setting new records, it seems a Trump administration is still regarded as good news for equities. Can this optimism last?
