In 2014, the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium joined forces in the Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), a public-private partnership aimed at shaping a competitive and sustainable bio-based industry sector in Europe. The goal: making better use of our renewable natural resources to create added value for the EU and its citizens through job creation, an increased competitiveness and a cleaner environment.
Three years later, halfway into its existence within the Horizon 2020 framework, bio-based in Europe accounts for a turnover of over 670 billion euro as well as 3.3 million jobs, with a further 5 billion euros of industry investment planned.
