New state of lending - Chinese loans to Africa and Europe’s reaction

By Ivaylo MARKOV, Managing Partner of Thales Capital   A recent actualization of the Chinese loans for Africa (CLA) database, managed by the Boston University Center for Global Development Policy, estimates, that between 2000-2022, 39 Chinese lenders provided a total of 1,243 loans worth $170.08 billion to 49 African governments and 7 regional institutions.   Between 2021 and 2022 alone, the CLA database records a total of 16 new loan commitments worth $2.22 billion from African government lenders to African government lenders, implying two consecutive years of African lending below $2 billion.
