When Martin Schultz called on the European Union (EU) to “force” Central European countries to take obligatory quotas of refugees, he probably did less to help the cause of European solidarity than he had hoped for. Certainly unintentionally, the president of the European Parliament evoked in our region memories of the Politburo of the former Soviet Union which forced its will upon our countries.
In Poland, the birthplace of the “Solidarity” movement whose electoral victory in June of 1989 led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and to the reunification of President Schulz’s native Germany, we know the meaning of solidarity.
