The video game industry is in the midst of an unprecedented shift. Formerly the province of a narrow slice of the global population (simply put, the middle class of developed economies) because of relatively high entry costs (i.e., the purchase of a console or a PC), video games are seeing an unprecedented expansion in its addressable market, thanks to the combined advent of games on mobile devices (migration from consoles and PCs towards smartphones) and free-to-play models, in which access to the game is free of charge and the gamer may buy tokens, “cosmetics” or battle passes, if he wishes.
